Vintage 50’s / 60’s red cocktail dress. Kimono cap sleeve. Squared back neckline. Piping at waist. Pleated skirt. Skirt is bunched at sides with bow accent. Metal zipper. Medium weight fabric with small horizontal stripe texture. Brand: Aldens. CONDITION: Slightly faded, particularly on top of shoulders. Discolored stitching. Zipper is a bit wavy. Stain on back bodice near shoulder blade. No size tags. Garment measurements are approximate. Shoulder to shoulder: 15.5″ Bust: 33″ Waist: 21.5″ Hips: loose Shoulder to hem: 36.5″ Shoulder to waist seam: 14″ Waist seam to hem: 22.5″ Fabric has no stretch. There is nothing to let out of bodice side seams. A tailor could possibly squeeze an extra half inch out at the zipper seam.

We are all familiar with Kenzo Takada’s « Jap » label (which would never fly in today’s world) but it didn’t start there. He got an early start in Paris, designing younger stuff for other stores and labels. This one, for Saks Fifth Avenue, is « MADD by Kenzo », of sheer poly georgette in a very Japanese mum and cloud print. Deep brown with pale blue and deep coral, the top has leg o’ mutton sleeves that button with four black balls (if you have ever had a SpongeBob popsicle from an ice cream truck, they will remind you of the black gumballs they use) on the forearm. Sort of an Ossie Clark vibe, we love this with a massive, sloppy bun and very high platform sandals. Skirt is fitted through the hip and then flares to right at the knee. Bust about 34″, shoulder to shoulder to shoulder 15.5″, outer sleeve 25″. Skirt is lined and has a 26″ waist and is 22.5″ long. Both are in gorgeous condition with no issues. Open the box and get in!
