Very rare collector’s two piece late 1880’s Victorian era walking suit (skirt and jacket), with a Philadelphia label. Black Silk Taffeta. Both pieces, and the embroidered black silk decorative details on the jacket and skirt are all hand stitched.
This 1910s or early 20s Edwardian silk walking skirt suit in black silk is simply gorgeous. It has unusual details that give it a really distinct stylish edge. The black silk has smocking details. The collar and the back detail feature blue grosgrain.
Bodice is comprised of a wool outer lay with a silk yoke and lined in polished cotton. The yoke neck closes in back. There is an under layer of the bodice that closed underneath the yoke. The outer pieces of the bodice closes over the yoke.
Jet black corduroy with an arch panel on the back. Large oval silk covered buttons. Three buttons on the front with an offset closure. Pirate style cuffs. Excellent condition no noted flaws. Dry cleaned and never worn, put in storage.
The jacket styling is impeccable. A slit pocket is on either side of the hip. It appears to have been custom made by a furrier as the label is intact. The skirt is slightly A-line and has a faux kick-pleat in the back.

A stunningly designed skirt and top in a beautifully puffy brocatelle. I might well have been haute couture given in its lines and the fineness of fabrication. The skirt has snaps and a hook and eye at the backside which gathers the fabric into a bustle-like feature (it has pleats that assist this bustled style). The bottom hem has 3 tiers of fabric folds for added weight and style (as pictured). 2 hanger loops inside the waistband. The top has a decorated front with a white and black striped silk inset. Bordering the striped decoration, are 2 rows of floral appliqué. The collar is velvet with a pretty embroidered touch. (Note: The neck does not fit our mannequin.) The shoulder and wrists are subtly raised and puffy. The top is constructed with numerous hand sewn stays (as pictured). Overall, the condition is excellent. We note the obvious deterioration of the top center inset. Which could easily be replaced with comparable fabric. There are a few pulls in the fabric, and in general, it shows some light aging here and there. But no splits or tears. The seams are very strong. A glorious and glamorous Parisian style evening dress in fabulous textiles including a black taffeta with tufts of cut velvet and a full lining that is stiffened at the bottom to help the hem to flair. It has a matching 15” wide long black silk taffeta sash that attaches and forms a bow in the back. It also has small shoulder pads which could be removed, and it flairs at the hip. The label indicates that the size is a French 46, which corresponds to a US size 14, and it is handmade. It is numbered 368770 on the label. The condition is excellent.
