Antique silk and taffeta long dress. skirt bottom is silk to taffeta type of fabric. the story is owner took the skirt from an antique Victorian dress to make the bottom of this dress. bust 36 in. skirt portion is fully lined, original lining from old dress.
This two piece dress made of green velvet and brown silk Faille is such a rich combination. It was created in the late 1880’s or early 1890’s. The skirt is lined in a brown cotton lining and is in good condition. The bodice is made of brown silk with deep green velvet sleeves and black cotton lace. There are a few holes in the lace. The inside lining which is patchwork has some staining and there are two large holes in one of the sleeves. See photo. The bodice has a bust of 34 inches a waist of 21 inches and shoulders of 12 inches. The skirt has a waist of 22 inches and a front length of 43 inches. She was slender and tall.
The ivory silk that backs the lace on the inside is shattered. Could be removed. Could be possibly worn gently. I’ll be happy to answer.

By the 1890s, the mourning industry was enormous. First mourning demanded dull, non-reflective black fabrics — crape was the gold standard. The exterior fabric is silk faille — identifiable by its fine horizontal ribbing — which was considered an eminently dignified choice for second mourning, carrying just enough sheen without veering into inappropriate lustiness.
I can not of course be sure without the feel of fabric, but I also think there is probably a bit of linen in the fabric. The sleeves are not truly fashionable for the 1890’s. This makes sense as fashion books ( the Godeys and Petersons mostly ) did not reach areas past Chicago swiftly.

The most unique part about this piece is that it comes with a matching victorian mourning pin. The pin has a photo of the original owner of this blouse wearing the blouse!!!! In used condition. I have tried to picture areas of concern as best I could, at the top of each sleeve just before the seam the taffeta is torn, also on the very bottom of the left side, a pin hole on the front also pictured and each cuff has split taffeta.
