It is made of a light baby blue chambray cotton twill weave linen fabric with smocking gathered detail around the waist and blue floral lace trim edging around the bottom.
A stunningly designed skirt and top in a beautifully puffy brocatelle. I might well have been haute couture given in its lines and the fineness of fabrication. The skirt has snaps and a hook and eye at the backside which gathers the fabric into a bustle-like feature (it has pleats that assist this bustled style). The bottom hem has 3 tiers of fabric folds for added weight and style (as pictured). 2 hanger loops inside the waistband. The top has a decorated front with a white and black striped silk inset. Bordering the striped decoration, are 2 rows of floral appliqué. The collar is velvet with a pretty embroidered touch. (Note: The neck does not fit our mannequin.) The shoulder and wrists are subtly raised and puffy. The top is constructed with numerous hand sewn stays (as pictured). Overall, the condition is excellent. We note the obvious deterioration of the top center inset. Which could easily be replaced with comparable fabric. There are a few pulls in the fabric, and in general, it shows some light aging here and there. But no splits or tears. The seams are very strong. 1800’s Antique Victorian Edwardian Ladies Black Mourning Coat with Large Collar. I am not very knowledgeable on fabric or the exact era on this piece but I do know it is old and I would say Victorian or Edwardian Era.
A genuinely remarkable survivor. The silk retains its body. The gathering is intact. The ruffles sweep cleanly around the hem. This is the kind of piece that turns up rarely, and in this condition, rarer still.
The silk taffeta fabric — identifiable by its characteristic fine horizontal ribbing and crisp hand — was one of the most fashionable and status-signalling fabrics of the period. The amber/rust cotton lining, the decorative fabric-covered exterior buttons, and the internal snap closures (known in the period as « dress fasteners » or « invisible hooks ») are all consistent with professional dressmaker construction of the 1870s–1890s.
Incredibly beautiful and rare 1940s circle skirt. It’s in very good condition for its age with no significant flaws. There is a fray at the waist opening, see photo. There may be other minor flaws that I didn’t catch, but she is an absolute beauty. It’s quite heavy. The flowered portion is a thin lightweight silk but the lower tiers are heavier taffeta. Beautiful Mid To Late 1800’s Victorian Era Silk Hand Beaded Bodice Mourning Jacket. Hand beaded with beaded fringe detail at the waist, velvet collar and waist trim, and a small crocheted pocket at the waist. Jacket also has lace detail around the collar although it is incomplete. Some tears and small bits of discoloration seen in photos but otherwise structurally in great condition for its age and most of the beading is still intact. Petite XXS Measurements as seen in photos.
The shape and detailing also support the date: a cropped, collarless bolero silhouette with slightly puffed sleeves and decorative corded soutache appliqué on the front. Similar construction, fabrics, and motifs are seen in pieces from Bavaria and southern Germany, Austria/Tirol, Switzerland, Hungary, and the Balkan regions, all of which used dark wool, soutache trim, and hand-finished interiors in their folk jackets.
This is a rare, beautifully structured example of late Victorian tailoring. Its cropped, pointed hemline is characteristic of the mid-to-late 1880s, designed to sit perfectly over a full bustle skirt.
